A university introduced a bicycle-sharing scheme to reduce short car journeys around its campus. At first, students could borrow a bicycle from the main gate and return it to the same place. Although many students welcomed the idea, the scheme attracted fewer users than expected. A survey revealed that returning a bicycle to the main gate was inconvenient for students whose final classes were at the other end of campus.
The transport team responded by opening three additional return stations. It also extended the borrowing period from one hour to three hours. During the following month, the number of completed journeys doubled. However, the team warned that this increase alone did not prove that car use had fallen: some bicycle users may previously have walked.
To investigate further, the university asked participants how they had travelled before joining the scheme. It also counted vehicles entering the campus on comparable weekdays. Early results suggested a modest decrease in short car trips, but the researchers wanted to collect data during the winter before drawing a final conclusion. They expected cold weather to affect cycling habits.
The scheme remains free for students. Next year, the university may add electric bicycles, but only if a separate safety review supports the change.
